Welcome to OurHartford.net, a part of:
WELCOME TO OUR HARTFORD! The state capital of Connecticut is an eclectic, busy city vibrant with business, education, recreation and culture. There's so much to see and do, and a rich variety of places to live. It's New England 's Rising Star! Settled in 1635, Hartford became a busy and prosperous manufacturing and trading center. A city stockpiled with valuable goods prompted a need for protection against theft and damage, which led to the growth of the insurance industry, and Hartford becoming known as the " Insurance City." Though some insurance companies have merged or left for other regions, they remain an economic pillar of this city and provide jobs for many thousands of people throughout the region. One of those companies was founded by the noted poet Wallace Stevens. Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe were residents of Hartford, too, and their homes on the Nook Farm compound are popular tourist attractions. The Wadsworth Atheneum, the country's oldest art museum, was established by Daniel Wadsworth and is home to an impressive collection of American and European art and historic furnishings. Sports fans will enjoy the action of the Hartford Wolf Pack hockey games, and the University of Connecticut's men's and women's championship basketball teams whose home games are played at the Hartford Civic Center. The New England Dodge Music Center hosts many of the biggest names in music. And Broadway-caliber shows take the stage at the city's Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Hartford's train depot, Union Station, has been restored to its original nineteenth-century beauty, and includes the stately brownstone depot, shops, restaurants and lively entertainment. The riverfront area is being refocused, with a new Convention Center, Science Center, hotels, restaurants and more, anchored with a Riverfront Plaza. Older structures in the city, including the Civic Center and the Colt Building-where Samuel Colt manufactured firearms-are being creatively converted to modern residential, office and flex spaces. Established neighborhoods in Hartford's South End, West End and elsewhere offer attractive options for families looking for spacious period homes.
